Former Thurston Mill has Sawdust in the Air!  
 
The former Thurston Mill is buzzing with activity thanks to entrepreneur Clint Bradbury. He bought the mill at the end of May, which is situated on Route 2 in Rumford. His newest endeavor, Premium Specialty Hardwoods is housed at the mill and will likely grow and prosper for years to come. Premium Specialty Hardwoods, deals with specialty Maine hardwoods such as Curly and Birds Eye Maple and Cherry lumber along with other select cuts of Maine forested woods. His clients currently include high-end automobile makers for whom his company makes components (shifting knobs, steering wheels, dash boards, etc.) and musical instrument makers such as Gibson, Eddie Van Halen, etc. Those in the music industry find the tone of northern mountain exotic hardwoods the best in the world.
 
Clint and his family own several businesses, the majority within the River Valley area and include: Bradbury Inc. which is a logging operation, Bradbury Enterprises which is an excavation business, Dixfield Discount Fuel, and Premium Log Yards. Clint began his first business in 1973 and can still remember the $150 monthly skidder payment that he was worried about being able to make. Today, after years of hard work, creativity, and good old Yankee ingenuity, Clint’s businesses employ about 70 people and contribute to the economy of the River Valley. He hopes to create 30-40 more good paying jobs within the next 2 years at Premium Specialty Hardwoods.
 
Bradbury’s employees have been working fervently to refurbish the mill, set up the equipment, and stock the mill with lots of lumber to manufacture into high-end specialty items. In addition, the mill will boast a retail area where the small furniture and cabinetmakers, wood turners and hobbyists can purchase specialty woods for their projects. Those who don’t do woodworking will be able to purchase furniture made by area craftsmen. Clint sees this as an opportunity to bring quality goods made from quality (and beautiful) Maine wood to folks who live in or visit the area. For those looking for certain types and grades of wood, Premium Specialty Hardwoods has the most knowledgeable staff and is eager to help no matter how big or small the potential buyer’s project is. Clint estimates that his operation is already the largest hardwood retailer in the State.
